Panel at ASAPS Annual Meeting will review the latest tummy tuck techniques from around the globe

NEW YORK, NY (April 14, 2013) – Within the last few decades, a number of different abdominoplasty techniques have been developed to treat abdominal contour abnormalities. Panelists at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), being held April 11-16, 2013, in New York, NY, will discuss the many roads to improving the look of the abdominal area and present some of the latest tummy tuck techniques from around the globe. “Abdominal Contouring – What Would You Do? will be moderated by Al Aly MD FACS, and feature panelists Fabio Nahas MD PhD MBA FACS, Lorne Rosenfield MD, Renato Saltz MD, and Simeon H. Wall Jr. MD.

“Today, there are many abdominoplasty techniques that surgeons can use to improve the contours of the abdomen.  Our panelists have expertise in the different techniques currently utilized around the world, and will help the audience compare and contrast the indications, contra-indications, benefits, and potential pitfalls of different abdominal contouring approaches,” said Dr. Aly of the University of California, Irvine, CA.

During the panel, a number of cases, each with different aesthetic concerns related to the abdomen, will be presented. Panelists will discuss how they would handle each case with their chosen abdominoplasty technique, as well as how to safely combine their approach with other procedures, including liposuction and breast surgery. The risks and outcomes of different techniques will be analyzed, along with ways to prevent complications such as seroma, necrosis, decrease in skin sensitivity, and deep vein thrombosis.

“This is a fantastic panel featuring several of the world’s experts in body contouring surgery,” said Dr. Wall of Shreveport, LA. “I will discuss full abdominoplasty with circumferential SAFELipo (separation, aspiration, fat equalization) of the trunk and subscarpal fat resection. This technique gives me the dramatic and refined results my patients are looking for, and allows me to safely achieve a true circumferential contouring all the way around the body, as opposed to treating just part of the problem.”

“Abdominal aesthetic surgery is an integral component of modern, safe body contouring surgery,” said Dr. Saltz of Salt Lake City, UT. “We will not only discuss specific treatments for different deformities of the abdomen, but we will also talk about everything from ways of creating an alluring, sexy belly button to how to incorporate back and flank liposuction to accentuate the waist.”

Panelists will also discuss some of the current controversies in abdominoplasty, specifically the lipoabdominoplasty, which involves aggressive liposuction of the remaining abdominal skin flap at the time of abdominoplasty.

“As in the past, I will caution that the lipoabdominoplasty should safely be applied in the patient with a lower body mass index to reduce the risk of abdominal flap ischemia and necrosis,” said Dr. Rosenfield of Burlingame, CA.  “In addition, I will review my approach—the High Tension Abdominoplasty—which is designed to honor several essential surgical tenets at once: to remove the greatest amount of skin through the shortest, most hidden scar, while still preserving the maximum blood supply to ensure the most reliable wound healing.”

“One thing I will focus on during the discussion are surgical alternatives to correct the muscular laxity of the abdomen during abdominoplasty,” said Dr. Nahas of Sao Paulo, Brazil. “I will present techniques to prevent recurrence of the laxity and on how to identify different deformities related to this condition. Once the deformity is identified, a specific technique is used, what avoids recurrence. These are techniques that are not known by every plastic surgeon and most of them correct these deformities in the same fashion regardless different anatomical characteristics.”

According to ASAPS statistics, abdominoplasty was the third most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States in 2012, with 156, 508 procedures performed.
