The Evolution of Breast Implants: Why Modern Implants May Require Fewer Exchanges

Do breast implants need to be exchanged? If you’re considering breast augmentation or already have implants, you may have heard the common belief that they need to be replaced every 10 years. While that may have been true for older implants, advancements in technology have significantly improved their durability.

At The Wall Center for Plastic Surgery, we stay at the forefront of these innovations, ensuring our patients receive high-quality, long-lasting results. Let’s explore how modern breast implants are designed to last longer and why routine check-ups can help you maintain optimal breast health.

How Often Do Breast Implants Need To Be Replaced?

Today’s implants are far more durable than those of the past. Manufacturers design them to withstand daily activities, and many can last well beyond the 10-year mark without issues.

A breast implant exchange may be necessary if you experience:

  • A rupture or leak (more common in older implants)
  • Capsular contracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant)
  • Aesthetic changes, such as a desire for a different size or shape
  • Natural changes in breast tissue due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or aging

But if you’re happy with your implants and aren’t experiencing complications, there is no set timeline requiring replacement.

Why Do Breast Implants Need To Be Replaced Less Often?

Thanks to advancements in materials and surgical techniques, today’s implants are more resilient and less prone to rupture. Here’s how modern technology has improved their longevity:

  • Stronger shells: Modern silicone implants have more durable outer shells that better resist wear and tear.
  • Saline implant improvements: In addition to having stronger shells, today’s saline implants have improved valves (used to fill them after placement) that are less likely to leak.
  • Advanced surgical techniques: Surgeons now use no-touch techniques and devices such as the Keller Funnel® to reduce contamination risks, which lowers the chance of complications leading to implant exchange.

With these improvements, women no longer need to assume their implants will need to be replaced at the 10-year mark.

The Role of Regular Check-Ups in Implant Longevity

Routine screenings help ensure your implants remain in good condition. The FDA advises imaging 5 years after surgery and every 2 to 3 years after that to detect silent ruptures. The Wall Center offers free ultrasound screenings for patients with silicone implants, aligning with these recommendations.

Our ultrasound technology is a safe, noninvasive way to monitor implant integrity without radiation. These screenings can:

  • Detect silent ruptures in silicone implants (which may not show visible symptoms)
  • Identify early signs of capsular contracture or implant shifting
  • Provide peace of mind that your implants are still intact and safe

How Much Does It Cost to Have Breast Implants Removed and Replaced?

The cost of a breast implant exchange varies based on several factors, including the complexity of the procedure, whether additional revisions are needed, and the type of implants chosen. If you’re considering a change, scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to get an accurate estimate.
