Dermal fillers remain one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, with patients having more options than ever before. The days of relying on 1 or 2 all-purpose, workhorse fillers to enhance most areas of the face are long gone. We offer a full menu of fillers formulated for specific areas of the face that produce exceptional results.
The beauty of cosmetic fillers is they produce immediate results with no downtime needed. The tradeoff is that those results are temporary. So, it’s natural that patients want to know how long dermal fillers last. There isn’t a single answer because the longevity of specific fillers differs from person to person, depending on factors such as the type of filler used and the treatment area.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers vs. Biostimulators
Dermal fillers primarily fall into two categories: hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and biostimulators. How do biostimulators differ from hyaluronic acid fillers?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, known for its ability to retain moisture and provide volume to the skin. HA fillers add volume to smooth wrinkles, enhance contours, or augment lips. HA fillers at Jade MediSpa include product lines from JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, BELOTERO BALANCE®, and TEOSYAL® RHA.
Biostimulators, on the other hand, contain substances that stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. These products, such as Sculptra® Aesthetic and RADIESSE®, produce subtle results initially that continue to improve for several months and last 12 to 24 months.
Another key difference is that you can reverse the results of HA fillers with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Biostimulators cannot be reversed.
Duration of Fillers by Area of the Face
The longevity of dermal fillers depends in part on the treatment area. Here’s a general overview of how long fillers tend to last in different facial regions:
Lips: Lip fillers such as JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® and Restylane Kysse enhance lip volume and definition, as you can see in the photos below. These fillers typically last between 6 to 12 months. Due to the constant movement in this area, filler duration may be slightly shorter compared to other areas of the face.
Cheeks: Whether you’re getting fillers to restore volume in the mid-face or to enhance the contours of your cheekbones, the results typically last about 12 to 18 months for hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA. Biostimulator fillers are often used for the cheeks, with results lasting up to 2 years or more.
Nasolabial Folds: The creases that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, known as nasolabial folds, can be effectively smoothed out with fillers. HA fillers typically last around 6 to 18 months in this area, while biostimulator fillers may offer results lasting up to 18 to 24 months.
Under-Eye Hollows: Fillers can address hollows and dark circles under the eyes—sometimes called tear troughs—creating a rejuvenated appearance. HA fillers in this area generally last around 6 to 12 months.
Jawline and Chin: Enhancing the definition of the jawline and chin is a popular treatment, with fillers producing results that last 6 to 12 months.
Factors Affecting Longevity
Why do fillers last longer for some people? There are a few reasons, including:
- Individual metabolism and lifestyle factors, such as if you spend a lot of time in the sun
- The filler’s specific formulation and concentration
- Overall skin health and aging process
Your choice of injector is also critical. An experienced injector can recommend the best filler for your needs and is knowledgeable about facial anatomy, injecting your fillers precisely where they’re needed. By scheduling regular touch-up injections, you can maintain the results of your filler treatments indefinitely.
The team of injectors at Jade MediSpa includes board-certified plastic surgeons, aesthetic nurse practitioners, and aesthetic nurse specialists, so you can be confident you’re getting expert care.
