Eyelid Surgery: How Do I Know It’s Time?

Your eyes can communicate more about your mood, energy level, and age than any other facial feature. Sagging, puffy eyelids can make you appear perpetually tired and unhappy, or older than you actually are. That’s why the men and women at our plastic surgery practice in Shreveport who undergo eyelid surgery are some of our most satisfied patients.

It’s not always easy to know when the time is right for blepharoplasty. Some men and women may postpone getting the procedure because the rest of their faces don’t show similar signs of aging, or because they’re satisfied with the results of nonsurgical treatments — such as injectable fillers — to correct their concerns.

At some point, however, eyelid surgery performed by one of our Shreveport plastic surgeons is the most appropriate way to achieve the best long-lasting results. How can you tell when that time has come? I suggest considering the following points, and scheduling a consultation with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon:

  • If your vision is in any way obscured by the presence of sagging skin, it’s definitely time. Upper eyelids can impair your peripheral vision. This can pose a risk when you’re driving and be disorienting as well. Eyelid surgery or, in some cases, a brow lift, can restore your full field of vision. If the procedure is done because of impaired vision, your health insurance may pay all or part of the cost.
  • Are bags around your eyes, or “raccoon eyes”, the first thing you notice in the mirror? Lower eyelid surgery can help. Our state-of-the-art treatment for the aging eyelid and orbital region creates a more youthful, rested appearance. When reducing the appearance of bags around the eyes, our surgeons may suspend or repair loose muscles, reposition small pads of fat around the eyes, or even use fat from your own body to help create a smoother, rejuvenated eyelid area.
  • When you see additional signs of facial aging, blepharoplasty can be combined with other procedures. Eyelid surgery alone can shave years off your appearance, but if you’re also experiencing lost volume in the cheeks and more pronounced wrinkling along the forehead and brow, our surgeons may recommend a combined facial rejuvenation treatment plan. These customized plans are tailored to meet your specific needs, based on your cosmetic goals and the condition of your skin and underlying tissue and muscles.

If it’s not quite time to undergo eyelid surgery, but you’ve noticed some volume loss around the eyes, a nonsurgical approach may be best-suited for your concerns. Fillers or fat grafting can produce excellent results and, when followed up with maintenance treatments, can help delay the need for plastic surgery for years.
